Ron Holland Design is delighted to announce that the contract has been signed to build a 150ft/46m performance ketch with Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, with a launch date planned for December 2010.

This exciting new design incorporates high performance features, thanks to a highly refined aluminium hull along with a powerful carbon fibre rig with a deep retractable centreboard keel. The interior will have the elegance of a classic flavour with a touch of modern.

Ron commented, "This new project incorporates the latest thinking from the Ron Holland studio for a fast, comfortable cruising yacht. Liara, the first Performance Yachts 100 has been launched

The launch of the first Performance Yachts 100, Liara, took place yesterday at the yard of builders Southern Ocean Marine, in Tauranga, New Zealand.

The first of the PY-100 series is the thoroughly modern brain child of naval architects, Dixon Yacht design. Performance Yachts say that although they are a relatively young company they strive to surround themselves with talented yacht builders and equipment suppliers.

The superyacht Liara, as the first PY-100 is to be christened, has been built to exacting specifications and with speed in mind, from her hydraulic lifting keel, to the top of her carbon high modulus Southern Spars built, mast.

Performance Yachts believe that they have a unique business model driving the company, created by Managing Director Adrian Nicolle. With designs and tooling already in place and maximising on recent experience, it reportedly helps to significantly reduce lead times and costs for subsequent boats and, without the large head office costs associated with other brands, ensures that very high specification boats are developed at true yard pricing.

The PY-100 is scheduled to be rigged and starting trials before the end of February. During the course of 2009 she will be appearing at several Superyachts events.

Hanuman, the replica new build of Endeavour II

Following the 156 sloop Hyperion in 1999 and the classic 295 schooner Athena in 2004, Dr. Jim Clark has reaffirmed his confidence in Royal Huisman engineering by placing a third, highly distinctive order with the yard.

Dr. Clarks latest commission is a modern recreation of Tommy Sopwiths beautiful 41.3m (135.5) "Super-J" class yacht, Endeavour II of Royal Yacht Squadron - the British Challenger - commissioned to win back the Auld Mug in 1937 America's Cup Race.

Interest in these legendary racing yachts has grown apace, with a number of restorations including the smaller Endeavour by Royal Huisman in 1989; the recreation of Ranger in 2006 and of W. Starling Burgesss Rainbow currently in build; and even some new projects to bring to life period designs that have remained on the drawing board until now.
Under J-Class Association rules, some design features are restricted historically, but performance can be optimised through a more flexible approach to sail area, ballast ratio, righting moment and build materials.

As a result, naval architects Gerard Dijkstra Partners are overseeing the build of Endeavour IIs hull in Alustar, with spars and rig in carbon composite to create a yacht that should demonstrate the full potential of Charles Ernest Nicholsons original design. To further this ambition, Royal Huisman are working with the naval architects, the independent Carew Group, master sailmakers North Sails and spar makers Rondal to create the optimum mast and sail configuration as, in effect, a single wing unit.Below decks, by contrast, interior designer Pieter Beeldsnijder has drawn upon fine traditional materials such as hand-polished French Walnut and period design references to create all the warmth and ambience of a bygone era, sensitively fused with the high amenity standards of a modern superyacht. There can be little doubt that immense interest will be created when Hanuman joins the J Class racing circuit in 2009.

St. Barths Bucket 2009

In what must be regarded as one of the most spectacular superyacht regattas on record - 34 yachts measuring between 76ft Wild Horses and 289ft Maltese Falcon took part - the Royal Huisman built schooner Meteor came away with top honours at the 2009 St Barths Bucket which has just drawn to a close in the Caribbean.

This extraordinary event seemed to defy the effects of the economic downturn by putting on a show more impressive than ever. Outstanding sailing conditions - the trades were blowing at around 15 to 22 knots for the three day event - a sublime venue, which does relaxed chic better than any other Caribbean island and race management which strikes the right balance between fun and serious, combined to stage an outstanding show of heavyweight competition. This was supersailing at its very best.

The fleet, which included great names like Adela, Timoneer, Windrose, Ranger, Rebecca and the aforementioned Maltese Falcon, was split into Grand Dames (for slightly slower yachts) and the Gazelles in which the likes of Leopard 3 and Sojana featured. It was left to the well-tuned pursuit race system developed by Jim Teeters and Hank Halstead to serve up some intensely close competition.

With nine yachts in the fleet this was something of a Perini Navi fest and with Maltese Falcon looking dangerously fast in the Grand Dames fleet and the new go-faster 38m Philippe Briand designed P2 featuring in Gazelle, they got very close to the top prize. But in the end it was a triumph for Huisman, Meteor, her hugely able crew led by captain Dean Maggio and designer Gerry Dykstra who developed the lines of the yacht with the Alden office.I was lucky enough to be aboard Meteor on day one when we came home first. Yachting's favourite musician Jimmy Buffet was also aboard that day. Jimmy owns a Tofinou, has ordered a Morris 36, has a Delta motor yacht and a house in St Barths. "Do you know guys I reckon I could do with one of these too!" quipped Buffet as he steered her to weather of Maltese Falcon - see picture. To cap it all Alice Huisman was there celebrating 125 years of the iconic Royal Huisman yard and as the champagne flowed back at the dock in Gustavia is went down as a very special day to remember.

Dubois Cup 2009

An exclusive fleet of superyachts, representing the best of the classic elegance for which Dubois Naval Architects is renowned, is ready and waiting on the quays of Porto Cervo for tomorrows start in the second edition of the Dubois Cup.

The event, which continues through 8th June, is hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, which continues to successfully link to the superyacht sector in its ongoing development of top-class sporting events for established and emerging competitive sailboat classes.

Five sailing superyachts ranging from the 37 metre sloop Nashira II to the 52 metre Kokomo will compete in coastal races off the north-eastern coast of Sardinia Sunday 7th and Monday 8th June. A first-time visitor to Porto Cervo is the 2008-launched Mondango, a 52 metre ketch whose 10.3 metre breadth is immediately notable, even when docked alongside her superyacht sisters. The Dubois-designed motoryachts Como and Ad Lib, both over 40 metres long, will also be in Porto Cervo for the duration of the event.

'The idea behind the Dubois Cup,' said Ed Dubois, 'is to bring the ‘family of Dubois designs together in beautiful place for fun racing and relaxed social events.' In keeping with this theme the regatta will support the childrens medical research charity Sparks, which helps families threatened by childrens diseases. Specifically, the organizers will be raising visibility for 'George's Appeal', which aims to raise funding for research in curing Neuroblastoma - a little known but deadly child cancer.

Pursuit-style racing, with staggered starts based on each yachts IRC rating, is scheduled to start at 1pm on Sunday 7th June. Westerly breezes of approximately 15 knots accompanied by sunshine and blue skies are forecast for tomorrow afternoon.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeraldas racing season will continue with a further three events scheduled for June. The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta will host 19 yachts of over 24 metres from 9th to 13th June while the Audi Invitational (18th to 21st June) will see one-design Farr 40 racing with the added attraction of sports-stars and celebrities aboard each of the yachts. The Rolex Farr 40 World Championship will round off the month with defending world champion Mascalzone Latino competing in the 26-strong fleet of yachts hailing from 10 nations.

Dubois Naval Architects, founded in 1977, has been at the centre of world yacht design for many years, and with the phenomenal growth of both the numbers and size of large sailing and motoryachts, has strived to design yachts in which form and function are perfectly balanced. The company designs beautiful yachts that are also significant pieces of engineering, marrying seaworthiness with grace and spawning concepts that perform well at every level. This partnering of great design and excellence in naval architecture remains at the heart of the Dubois philosophy.

My Song leads Loro Piana Superyacht regatta 2009

Marco VogelesGliss took second place while Charles Dunstones 35.7 metre Hamilton II came in third.

The overall classification for the event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in collaboration with Boat International Media, now sees the Reichel-Pugh designed My Song move into the lead with the 32 metre Gliss in second place. The Dubois-designed Moonbird, which led the fleet after yesterdays Race Two, has moved back to third place overall. Only four points separate the top three yachts and with just one more race to run and no discards, all is still to play for and no one can afford to make mistakes tomorrow.

Racing, scheduled to start at 12 midday today, was delayed for two hours this morning as the YCCS Race Committee waited for the 30 knots of Mistral wind to calm, as per this mornings forecast. By the first starting signal at 1 pm the prevailing north westerly wind had fallen to 16 knots from 290 degree and the fleet set off on a 29 mile course through the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago.
'It was fresh but not frightening!' was the comment of PRO Peter Reggio which summed up todays conditions.

After crossing the start line off Porto Cervo the fleet sailed south to round the islands of Mortorio and Soffi before turning north and heading to Monaci island. After leaving Monaci to port the fleet turned back towards Porto Cervo and the finish line just in front of the entrance to the Marina.

Once again Wally Yachts held the top three spots in elapsed time with Saudade, Indio and Open Season respectively setting the pace today.

The fourth and final race of the event is scheduled to start at 12 midday tomorrow and the forecast gives more mistral wind of approximately 16 knots accompanied by clear blue skies and very high temperatures.

Following yesterdays sumptuous beach party at the Romazzino Hotel, title sponsor Loro Piana has organized no less than two social events for this evening. Owners and guests will be attending a gala dinner at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Clubhouse while crews will be attending an open air party.

World’s biggest floating hotel, The Aquiva, to bring life of luxury to Docklands

Britain sent the decommissioned QE2 to the Gulf as a floating hotel. Now Dubai is to return the favour, building the worlds biggest yacht to be anchored beside the Thames as a floating hotel.

The Aquiva is expected to be the worlds largest pleasure boat. It will enable hotel guests to obtain a flavour of the mega-yacht lifestyle when it is moored amid what today is a semi-derelict London landscape of warehouses and building sites.

The project follows the removal last year of Britains most famous cruise ship, the decommissioned QE2, to be refitted as a luxury hotel off the coast of one of Dubais popular artificial palm-shaped islands.

The contrast could hardly be greater between the azure waters where the QE2 is moored and the grey South Dock, future home of the Aquiva.

Accommodating 300 guests and due to open in 2012, the yacht will offer views of the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf in addition to the distinctive spikes of the O2 Millennium Dome.

The boat, whose design is said to be inspired by the sail-shaped Burj Dubai hotel, will dwarf other giant craft such as the 531ft Dubai, owned by the emirates ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.

Unlike normal yachts, the Aquiva will have no engine, relying on tugs to tow it into place. It will have to squeeze through locks connecting the Thames to South Dock where it will be permanently moored in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Where most mega-yachts would feature the captains bridge, the Aquiva will instead boast a presidential suite. The vessel will have seven decks and sit 75ft above the waterline.

Every suite will have its own Jacuzzi and - for days when the wind is not howling in off the North Sea - a private barbecue with a chef is available as well as sun decks.

A fleet of Venetian-style water taxis will be on hand to whisk guests to and from the office blocks at nearby Canary Wharf, some of the Olympic locations and other Thames-side destinations.

Rupert Mann, the interior designer responsible for decorating the yacht, said: "Obviously you havent got the Dubai climate but its an amazing location and we think it will become a real attraction.

"Were aiming for six stars but with the economic climate we might have to settle for five. Either way the rooms will be spectacular. Its going to be the height of luxury."

The main backer of the project is the Dubai-based property developer Khalid Al-Ghurair. It plans a chain of yacht hotels around the Gulf in addition to the one in London.

The idea is that the yacht will be the centrepiece of a luxury development that rejuvenates its rundown location with a Dubai-style archipelago of artificial islands containing moorings for yachts, waterfront cafes, beaches, nature reserves and parkland.

Wood Wharf, which is being designed by Lord Rogers, architect of the dome, will roughly double the size of the existing Canary Wharf development.

Gliss victorious at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2009

Sailing yacht Gliss took first place seven points ahead of the Reichel-Pugh designed My Song owned by Pierluigi Loro Piana and was awarded the Silver Jubilee Cup during the prize giving in the Yacht Club's Piazza Azzurra. Charles Dunstone's 36 metre Hamilton II came in third, just one point behind My Song.

Vogele was delighted on arrival at Porto Cervo Marina: "The location is the best, the organization is the best and we enjoyed this regatta so much. Rocks, stakes and sticks are used as natural marks and it's perfect for everybody. This event is exceptional and excellently organized."

Today's fourth and final race of the regatta saw some shifty wind conditions for the first time in the event. The majority of the fleet started in 12 knots of wind from 310 which unexpected swung round to 180° and fell to 8 knots during the starting sequence. The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta uses pursuit style racing with staggered starts based on each yacht's handicap: the pure cruising yachts therefore start first with the faster yachts starting at the end of the sequence so that the entire fleet ends up sailing together around the course. Today's sharp wind shift meant that the first yachts started on an upwind beat while the last yachts to start were flying their spinnaker.

The fleet sailed north from the start off Porto Cervo to round Monaci island before turning back south to round the Secca Tre Monti rock and heading through the strait between the mainland and the Isole delle Bisce Island and the finish line off the Gulf of Pevero.

Today's Race was won by Open Season, owned by Thomas Bscher, ahead of Gliss and Magic Carpet 2, owned by Lindsay Owen Jones.

Bscher was pleased with the week's racing: "This was a super week, Porto Cervo at its best. The weather was a dream, ideal sailing conditions which you will not find at this time in Europe. Regarding Open Season, we did quite well on three of the days, except the second day when we made a wrong decision. The organization was first class, the race committee as well. We will definitely come again."

Tommaso Chieffi, Veteran America's Cup sailor (1986, 1992, 2003, 2007) and tactician aboard My Song which had an impressive 1, 3, 1 scoreline until she took twelfth place in today's race, was philosophical "We were unlucky today. We had our start just when the wind swung from mistral to sirocco and we more or less stopped, along with the other five boats that started towards the end of the sequence. We had a good week and it has been a great event, it's just a shame that the last race went this way for us."

"The variety of boats all racing together, the location, the weather and the atmosphere is unique," commented Ed Dubois, designer of fourth-placed Moonbird. "The race organisation by YCCS is world class and the yacht club is possibly the most beautiful and organised in the world. In common with our clients, we at Dubois feel it is the superyacht regatta for the Mediterranean."

Superyacht Cup 2009 starts tomorrow

The build up has begun on the dock at Muelle Viejo, the new venue for this year's Superyacht Cup, where 18 yachts will take part in the four-day superyacht regatta starting tomorrow, on Wednesday 24th of June.

Over the next few days, this special site in the oldest part of the port will be transformed into The Horus Superyacht Cup Regatta Village, incorporating a huge circular shade to cover the bar and entertainment area and temporary structures will be set-up for the event office and press centre. Registration for the yachts starts on Wednesday followed by the Welcome Cocktail party at 20.00. The first race is on Thurdsay June 25th starting at 13.00.

Peter Harison's 35m Farr designed ketch Sojana sailed in to Palma yesterday after a quick trip across the Atlantic from Antigua. A great supporter of the Superyacht Cup, Sojana has taken part twice in Palma editions and twice in Antigua, winning in 2007. Mari Cha III also arrived yesterday sailing all the way from Tahiti in the South Pacific. Royal Huisman-built yachts Gliss, Hyperion, Meteor, and Maria Cattiva, as well as the Wally Open Season , are all ensconced in Palma where the captains and crew are all busily preparing their yachts and looking forward to the action on and off the water next week.

The weather in Palma at the end of June is traditionally hot, creating perfect sea breeze conditions in the afternoons, and the Race Officer will be looking to set courses around the bay of Palma that will keep the racing close and exciting for everyone. This year the 'Bucket Rating System' will be used to set individual start times and all yachts will be in the one class. Expert Ratings Officer Jim Teeters of US Sailing will be calculating the handicaps.

Following on from the success of this rating system at the St Barth's Bucket earlier in the year, it is likely the results will be very close, despite the vast differences in designs and sizes of the yachts taking part. Although there was a provision for an IRC class, even the most performance-orientated yachts have opted to race in a larger class against the whole fleet rather than creating an IRC racing class of only four or five yachts.

Check for daily results at The Horus Superyacht Cup 2009.

Superyacht Cup 2009 starts tomorrow

32m Sailing sloop Gliss wins Horus Cup 2009.

A new venue, a new title sponsor and three spectacular days of racing for the 18-strong fleet in the Bay of Palma combined to produce a highly successful Horus Superyacht Cup 2009.

The eventual winner of the iconic Bent Cleat Trophy for the winning yacht went to Marco Vogeles 32m Royal Huisman built, sloop Gliss, designed by Philippe Briand, but she was chased hard by the 46m Perini Navi Antara skippered by the popular Jonno Johnston, Thomas Bshers 28.6m, Frers-designed Wally Open Season and the Bruce King-designed 39.9m Maria Cattiva, also built by Royal Huisman.

With helmsmen and skippers including Volvo star Mike Sanderson, Americas Cup helmsman Peter Holmberg and solo sailor Nick Maloney aboard a variety yachts accompanied by a sprinkling of world class trimmers and bowmen there was a real competitive edge out on the water.

The big challenge for The Horus Superyacht Cup this year was settling into its new venue close to Palmas old city centre and with the help of new title sponsors and the continued backing of Abu Dhabi this element of the three-day regatta proved to be a resounding success.

The stylishly appointed village protected by a spectacular circular canopy became the focal point of the onshore action with all 18 yachts moored conveniently stern-to. Palmas magnificent Le Seu cathedral provided a dramatic backdrop and the proximity of the city mean meant friends and family could easily join the event generating a lively and convivial atmosphere. The elegant bar staff, live music each evening and free of charge happy hours gave the village a buzz that matched the attractions of Palma itself.

Also new for this year was the introduction of the Bucket rating system which calculates a yachts performance based on design information and subsequently provides her with an individual starting time for each pursuit race. The idea has been imported from the Caribbean and the USA where it is used to good effect at the St Barths and Newport Bucket regattas. Start times can also be calculated to take into account the wind conditions and race-course lengths can be set accordingly.

Predicting the winds off Palma has always been regarded as something of a black art but two light to moderate days followed by a sparkling day blessed with 18 knots of onshore breeze gave the fleet excellent racing conditions. Antara was the first yacht to start on Abu Dhabi Race Day and she fought off all opposition to take first place. The same thing happened to the Fife designed, Horus campaigned Sunshine in race three, starting and finishing first, while in race two the lightweight fliers Open Season and Black Pearl took the fleet apart.

But there were some great close finishes, particularly in race three when 15 yachts finished with 20 minutes of each other, eight of them just 3min 30sec seconds apart. The exceptional racing in final pursuit was the ideal aperitif for a spectacular open-air prize giving and gourmet buffet at the Es Baluard museum which overlooks the Bay of Palma and the regatta village itself.

With the prize giving complete (see Results) things really started hotting up when The World Famous Red Sox, billed as the worlds best party band, took to the stage. This stunning precision rock band can play just about anything in any style and brought owners, crew, family and friends to the dance floor for a fantastic finale.

Title sponsors Horus have signed for three years, the venue is secure for the same period and the organisers have set the dates for the next regattas as 23rd - 26th June 2010.

We very much looking forward to seeing you all again for next years regatta!

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda prepares September onslaught

The Yacht Club Costa Smeraldas September sporting calendar consolidates the entire spectrum of modern-day yachting as sailing superyachts, competitive maxis and honed racing sport boats congregate in Porto Cervo for four events which attest the Clubs decision to concentrate on two distinct areas of development; superyacht events designed to bring the cream of the nautical world to the YCCS and competitive regattas for leading one-design classes.

The month kicks off with the Perini Navi Cup from 3-5 September. Organized for the first time by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the third edition of this rendezvous will bring a record fleet of 21 Perini Navi yachts to Porto Cervo for three days of racing through the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago accompanied by a rich social programme for owners and their guests.

With 19 of the competing yachts coming in at over 40 metres in length and the inimitable 88 metre Maltese Falcon present to defend her victory in the 2006 edition, spectators will be in for a rare treat.

The 20th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (6th to 12th September) will see Porto Cervo play host to another fleet of sailing giants, this time ranging from technologically advanced racing machines to elegant cruisers.

Thirty-eight maxis have enrolled to-date and the fleet will be divided into Cruising, Mini Maxi, Racing and Spirit of Tradition categories, while competing Wally yachts will race in their own division.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is open to sailing yachts over 18 metres and some of the largest participating craft, Albert Buells Saudade (MLT) and Hasso Plattners Visione (GER), measure over 45 metres in length.

Neville Crichton (NZL), who was twice victorious in his division (2003 and 2006) with his second Alfa Romeo, will be competing with the third version of Alfa Romeo, a 21 metre mini-maxi launched in 2008.

The mini maxi division is likely to see fierce competition with the STP65s Container (GER) and Luna Rossa (ITA) signed up alongside Niklas Zennstroms Judel/Vrolijk 72 Ran (GBR). Title sponsor Rolex will provide the traditional array of exclusive social events for owners and crews once back ashore.

As the maxi yachts depart from the docks of Porto Cervo Marina they will promptly be replaced by a fleet of one-design racing boats which represent the opposite end of the competitive sailing spectrum. The Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series, the fifth and final leg of the class European racing circuit, will take place from 18-20 September.

The Reichel-Pugh designed Melges 20 was launched in 2008 and is designed to be crewed by two to four people. Like other boats in the Melges sailboat family, the 20 footer combines clean, simple lines with top-level engineering and performance. A strong favourite for the event will be Benedetto Giallongos Value Team which currently holds a clear lead in the overall classification for the series.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeraldas 2009 Porto Cervo sailing season will conclude in grand style with the first ever World Championship for the Melges 32 class. The Audi Melges 32 World Championship is scheduled from 21st to 27th September and approximately 30 teams are expected to participate.

Twenty-five Melges 32s have recently completed the final leg of the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series in which Carlo Alberinis Calvi Network (ITA) took overall victory. Other Italian teams to watch will include Lorenzo Santinis Uka Uka Racing and Vincenzo Onoratos Mascalzone Latino.

Among the international competitors Pieter Taselaars Bliksem (USA) proved to have a strong team when they won the third leg of the series in Scarlino, Italy.

"As is traditional, September will be a very busy month for us," said YCCS Sports Director Edoardo Recchi. "It is a pleasure for us to be able to organize all of these events which bring us the most beautiful and most diverse fleets of boats: from the 88 metre Maltese Falcon to the 6 metre Melges 20."

Perini Navi Cup 2009

Westerly winds gusting at up to 40 knots put paid to racing on the second and final day of racing. The results of Fridays race are valid for the series and therefore the 88 metre, triple masted Maltese Falcon, which reached top speeds of 21 knots during racing, takes victory overall.

The 64 metre Felicita west takes second place and the 46 metre Antara third.

The final prize giving took place at 6 p.m. on the Yacht Clubs Piazza Azzurra and the Perini Navi Cup and a Rolex timepiece were awarded to the Maltese Falcon by the President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, His Highness the Aga Khan and Fabio Perini. Prizes were also awarded to the yachts which had completed Fridays race in the fastest elapsed time. The 56 metre Salute was the swiftest yacht, having completed the 25 mile course in just under 1 hour and 50 minutes, and was followed by the 56 metre Felicita West. The 50 metre ketch Baracuda, which stands out visually due to an unusual steel grey hull combined with violet sails, was third fastest around the course.

'We saw these yachts at their very best on Friday.' commented YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo. 'The racing really was of a very high standard and the fleet is so impressive. Seeing 19 Perinis lined up in front of the YCCS at sunset brought such glamour and elegance that we will remember them for a very long time.'

Owners and guests were due to round off a highly enjoyable two days with a gala dinner on the Yacht Club Costa Smeraldas panoramic pool terrace.

The Yacht Club Costa Smeraldas sporting calendar continues immediately with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup which starts on 6th September with inspections and registrations while racing starts on Monday 7th September.

Italian Yacht Makers Resist \'Suicide\' Price Cuts by Rivals

"Whoever is cutting prices heavily is committing suicide," said Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group chief executive officer, in an interview at the Genoa Boat Show, which started on Oct. 3. "The buyer would probably think you have a product that loses its value quickly" if you resort to price cutting, he said.

Yacht makers are suffering after international boat sales fell about 30 percent last year and some customers canceled orders amid the worst recession in six decades. At the Monaco Yacht Show last month, boat builders from across Europe, including London-based Burgess Yachts, said theyre lowering prices by as much as 20 percent to spur sales.

Italy is the worlds largest maker of mega-yachts, luxury vessels longer than 70 meters (230 feet). At the Monaco show, boatmakers said sales of smaller boats are drying up as their traditional buyers such as bankers, hedge fund executives and entrepreneurs lose access to credit.

Azimut Benetti and Ferretti sell boats for as much as 80 million euros ($117 million). Azimut yachts start at 300,000 euros. Some come fitted with spiral staircases, marble bathrooms and furnishings from the Fendi Casa collection.

Opulence

Ferrettis most opulent offerings include custom- designed CRN yachts, which can exceed 200 feet. A similar length GiVi vessel comes with a gym, helicopter pad and what Ferretti calls a "wellness area." The company sells boats starting at about 500,000 euros under nine brands, including Riva and Bertram.

"Responding to the crisis by cutting prices, reminds me of when Italy devalued the lira to make its exports more competitive," Salvatore Basile, CEO of Forli, Italy-based Ferretti Group, said in an interview. "That tactic lasted about six months after which inflation kicks in and you have to start all over again. Its a little like a boomerang.

"Azimut Benetti, which introduced 15 boats this year, is offering financing for up to 15 years, no repayment for the first year, and a three-year guarantee. Ferretti has presented five boats and plans a further 10 by the end of 2010. Messina, Sicily-based Aicon SpA, which sells luxury vessels for as much as 10 million euros and sells Morgan yachts, plans to introduce a third brand.

New Kind of Buyer

A new kind of buyer is emerging, looking for greater comfort, lower fuel consumption and more environmentally friendly yachts that allow them to enter into protected areas, Aicon CEO Pasquale Siclari said, adding that buyers are tending to avoid showing off. Aicons third brand will be dedicated to "quality rather than just speed," he said.

"They want more for their money, they are going slower, want eco-compatibility, and the market is going to have to adapt," Anton Francesco Albertoni, chairman of Italys marine industry association UCINA, said in an interview.

"The real rich continue to buy," and yachts for 5 million euros are doing well, while boats at the lowest end of Aicons range at 1 million euros are suffering the most, Siclari said in an interview on board a company yacht during the show.

Signs of Recovery

Azimut Benetti has seen signs of recovery in the U.S. linked to financing, and the Russian market may be catching up even faster after dropping to zero earlier in the year, Vitelli said. Interest has emerged from the rest of the world over the past month and the company has found replacement buyers for orders that were canceled between October 2008 and March, he said.

Ferretti has received more orders following last months Cannes boat show than the same time last year, Basile said. Its in talks on two boat orders from Russia.

Aicons Siclari said that its sales in Greece and Central America were going well for his company.

Sales of Azimut Benetti yachts in the year ending August may have fallen about 37 percent to almost 700 million euros, while the Ferretti Groups dropped about 11 percent to 800 million euros, the executives said. The CEO of Aicon, whose sales in the period ending August 2008 fell more than 60 percent to 70 million euros, declined to comment on sales in the most recent period.

The Genoa boat show is the worlds biggest, taking into account the land and port area dedicated to the event, according to UCINA. The show, which ends on Oct. 11, hosts 2,400 vessels.

ANTIGUA SUPER YACHT CUP 2010 RESULTS

Despite the set-back of not being able to hoist any mizzen sails, Sailing Super yacht Sojana managed to hold-off the rest of the fleet and win the third and final race of The Superyacht Cup Antigua 2010. Bucket ratings expert, Jim Teeters worked out Sojanas temporary sloop rating after they suffered a broken mizzen boom on the first day, and gave them a 4 minute start advantage over second starting boat, Rebecca and a 29 minute start on Visione.

It was another windy day with plenty of action for these immensely powerful superyachts, flying full mains and maximum downwind sails, they raced around the 24 mile course in just two and a half hours. The breeze picked up on the final beat to the high 20s and Visione closed the gap on Sojana, finishing just 51 seconds behind her. An elated Peter Harrison, owner of Sojana, cheered as he crossed the line in first place, a much improved day out for him and his crew who have played as many rounds of golf on the island as sailing races in the past few days!

Ranger and P2 had a tight battle all day, crossing tacks several times. At one point P2 looked to be clear ahead, but Ranger gained on the last upwind leg, beating them by just over 3 minutes. Throughout the three days of racing the emphasis on sailing safe has been very high on everyones mind and the superyacht racing protocol has been put to the test by the experts, without incident or protest.

High priority on the agenda of this friendly superyacht regatta, the social program has been a huge hit; from Pirates of the Caribbean fancy dress, to last nights all important ‘cook-off between the yachts, the social competitions were just as fiercely contested as the sailing. Sojanas Captain, Marc Fitzgerald, prepared a magnificent grilled halibut and vegetable risotto while Mirabella V crew barbecued up a storm carefully supervised by the Captain ‘Dr Rocka.

The event closed with a grand Prize Giving Buffet dinner at the Copper Lumber Hotel in Nelsons Dockyard.

ANTIGUA SUPER YACHT CUP 2010 RESULTS

Jet Set:Sales on the High Seas?

Sales of used super yachts, those over 100 feet, have been selling at deep discounts since the market tanked in late 2008.

"There are still a lot of bargains around," says Curtis Stokes, owner of yacht broker Curtis Stokes Associates in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "There are some great buys out there, but the inventory is thinning."

Before the downturn, ultra-wealthy individuals couldnt get enough of the ultimate status symbol. They were buying bigger yachts and flipping them like condos in Florida.

"The whole industry fell off a cliff about 18 months ago," says Kenneth Wooton, U.S. associate editor of The Yacht Report. "It had been extremely strong for some years prior to that. Builders had backlogs and plenty of business, more in some cases than they could handle."

Yachts normally take about two years to build so the backlog carried some shipyards through part of the recession, but lack of new orders and an overhang of used yachts for sale drove other builders to layoff employees and restructure debt.

European superyacht makers, Beneteau in France, Ferretti in Italy and Bavaria Yachtbau in Germany, suffered huge losses, Business Week reported in April.

"The biggest change that has been seen is pricing, with multiple price cuts on the second-hand yachts," says Elie Brade, the research editor for The Yacht Report. "Its a combination of owners wanting and needing to sell and buyers being much more ruthless in terms of what they are willing to pay for a yacht. New build orders are significantly down from previous years, although in early 2010 we have seen some tentative signs of growth in the market with new build orders placed at the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010 including a $140 million motoryacht from an Italian shipyard and a $47 million motoryacht from a Dutch shipyard."

The last 18 months have been the perfect storm for super yachts, says William Smith of Trinity Markets in Gulfport, Miss., which is one of the largest shipyards nationally.

"The combination of a falling market, a new president and class warfare has prompted buyers to keep their hands in their pockets," he said.

Smith says a backlog has helped him weather the downturn, but "it was very, very quiet in 2009." He hasnt seen any new orders yet, but "now that the market is back, the inquiry level has increased."

Financing is also a problem, at least for new boats, according to Smith. "Financing for yachts dried up," he says. "They says theyll lend but they want high interest rates and lots of money down."

Of course, its unlikely that buyers of the biggest super yachts need financing. For example, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is reported to own the worlds largest yacht, the bullet-proof 525-foot Eclipse, which was built by Blohm + Voss Industries in Germany at a cost of $350 million.

"So much of this is psychological," Smith says. "They see they have half the amount of money and they reconsider buying even though they still have billions."

Plus, the superyacht market is worldwide. Boats are built globally and are mobile so they are not constrained by local conditions the way the housing market is. In fact, a weaker dollar is making sales in the United States more attractive.

Yachts that are being built now are larger than ever, says Glenn Rogers, co-founder of super yachts. But he thinks brokers will make out best this year because it is really a buyers market in used yachts.

"Its never been a better time to buy a super yacht," he says. "Youre seeing values coming off 25% to 40%."

He also says he is seeing more fractional ownerships of yachts, or time shares on the high seas. "The notion of value is proliferating throughout the whole industry," Rogers says.

Terms

Chartering a large yacht can be a complex transaction, but allowing the MORE experts to perfect every detail takes all the worry away. CHARTER RATES

Charter rates are quoted per week for renting a yacht. Seven days is generally the minimum charter period accepted by yachts, but charters can be for any duration over seven days. Charters over seven days are calculated pro-rata against the weekly rate, which is divided by seven and multiplied by the number of charter days.

High season rates apply to the most popular charter periods, which are July-August and Christmas-New Year, and are also normally applicable to all major events such as the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival. Low season rates apply to all other periods. The charter rates given on these pages are believed to be correct but may be subject to change. CHARTER TERMS

Most charter rates given on these pages are based on MYBA terms, which imply that the yacht will be provided to the charterer in full commission and with all necessary equipment, properly insured for marine risks and managed by a crew whose wages, food, and clothing are covered by the owner. All other operating expenses are payable by the charterer and comprise (but are not restricted to) the following items: fuel and lubricating oils for the yacht and her tenders; local taxes; pilotage; port, harbor and marina fees; customs clearance; water and electricity; personal laundry; all provisions, wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks, and consumables for the charterer's party; and telecommunication costs.

Occasionally, a yacht may offer a variation on the terms described above. Full details of any charter terms that vary from standard MYBA terms will be provided when presenting the relevant yachts. VALUE-ADDED TAX

Commercially registered yachts are usually tax-exempt. However, please note that due to European Union tax legislation, value-added tax may be added to the gross charter fee for charters taking place in European Union waters. Special tax regimes also apply in Croatia and Greece. THE CHARTER AGREEMENT

After the availability of the selected yacht has been verified, the client receives a standard MYBA charter agreement for signature. If the cruising itinerary selected necessitates embarking or disembarking from a point other than the yachts home port, positioning charges (delivery/redelivery fees) may be required. These charges, if applicable, will be confirmed in advance and affirmed in the charter agreement, together with any taxes that may apply. PAYMENT TERMS

A deposit of 50% of the total charter fee is payable by bank transfer upon signature of the charter agreement. This confirms the clients booking. The remaining 50%, plus an advance provisioning allowance, together with any taxes, delivery/redelivery fees, and any additional agreed-upon charges, is payable by bank transfer one month before the charter commences. OPERATING EXPENSES

The advance provisioning allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 25% of the total charter fee, but it may be 30% in some cases. Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms (above), such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees, and ad hoc incidentals, these funds will be given to the captain before the start of charter. He will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during the charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by the captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once. All outstanding bills should be settled in cash before final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of charter will be fully reimbursed. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by MORE or the captain, payment for which will be deducted from the APA. EVERY DETAIL COUNTS

Several weeks before boarding a yacht, a detailed questionnaire is offered to the client: it describes the preferences and special needs of all the members of the party, such as dietary or medical requirements, details of any allergies, and sports or entertainment requests. This form enables the crew to ensure that they do everything possible to make the charter a fabulous experience. SMOKING ON BOARD

Smoking is not permitted inside most yachts. However, this policy sometimes varies. For safety reasons, smoking in cabins and staterooms is prohibited on all yachts. CREW GRATUITIES

Crew gratuities are discretionary, although it is customary for a charterer who has enjoyed the kind and attentive service of an obliging crew to extend a gratuity. Crew gratuities normally come to approximately 10% of the charter fee, but can be adjusted up or down according to your level of satisfaction. The best way to ensure that all crew members receive equal recognition is to entrust the distribution of gratuities to the captain. In this way, inconspicuous crew members such as engineers and culinary staff, who make an important contribution to your safety and enjoyment, will not be overlooked. INSURANCE

We strongly recommend that charterers take out cancellation and curtailment insurance to protect their investment if unforeseen circumstances prevent or curtail their charter. In addition, all members of the charter party should be covered by personal accident and medical insurance, and their personal effects should be insured against theft, loss, or damage.

Other forms of insurance, such as charterer`s liability, may also be prudent. Our brokers will be pleased to assist you with arranging any policy not covered by the basic charter agreement. EXPERT GUIDANCE

MORE has extensive experience and an unrivalled reputation in brokering yachts that are at least 130 feet (40 meters) long. No other firm in the area has our degree of specialist expertise or professional commitment. While every effort has been made to present the many varied and constantly evolving facets of chartering as simply as possible, our charter team will be pleased to offer any further clarifications required.
